Bull’s Beach Cabanas, Placencia, Belize — 3 star

A FEW SHOTS OF BULL’S BEACH CABANAS

Untitled-1
Decent double sized bed. Clean enough room, spacious with a fridge. Worked out well.
Cancun mall
A fan, a chair and an armoire.
Cancun sunset
Bathroom was just ok. Wasn’t bad, wasn’t great.
Bit claustrophobic of a shower, with dirty shower curtains and a hole where the drain should be.
Porch view
The view from the porch. Not too bad.

Review:
Bull’s Beach wasn’t easy to find, but is right next to a pretty popular spot, the name of which escapes me. Right near the beach, which isn’t uncommon in Placencia. The room and bathroom were pretty clean, though the bathroom was a bit under-par. Not a big deal though. The staff was nice enough, but didn’t stand out as being particularly warm or helpful. The higlight of this place was that we managed to get a decent price, the room was spacious and allowed us to do our daily exercises, and the balcony with its 2 chairs had a decent enough view and a constant breeze. In terms of location, it’s pretty much in the middle of the main sidewalk so it’s central and convenient.

Pros:
Relatively clean
Great location right near the beach
Decent price for 2 people
Spacious
Fans

Cons:
No kitchen
Bathroom was under par
Not all windows had screens

Lydia’s would have been a great option for us to spend our days in Placencia but the Wifi was so bad that it was useless. Pages could take up to 3 minutes to load. For me, that wasn’t an option. It’s unfortunate because while it’s not a huge hostel, it had a few

Pros:
Price
Location
Decent kitchen
Decent sized room
Window screens
Use of a fridge
Hammocks and small sitting area outside
Clean
Fans

Cons:
Wifi was useless – making this place impossible for me to stay in (remember, I’m a digital nomad and need internet for work)

Review:
Nomadas is a great hostel that like many, offer private rooms and dorms. It appears to have been built for this purpose. It can be a bit warm at night but private rooms come with enough fan power to make it relatively comfortable and dorms seem to be adequately ventilated as well. You can pay extra for access to the AC but this proved not to be required. Nomadas features a nice pool, which is necessary for cooling off in Merida, decent Internet, plenty of activities like cooking classes, salsa classes, tours of the city, and weekly live music. The common area is conducive to meeting people though it closes relatively early. It can be a bit loud in the dorms, but the private rooms are generally pretty quite. The price is right, it offers a pretty good value and it’s quite well run. It’s well located near the older part of town, and is a good base from which to explore not only the city but the Mayan ruins in the area. It has great turnover so there are always new people to meet and it’s quite clean and well maintained. This is a good option for people visiting Merida and ranks as one of my top 5 hostels so far.

Pros:
Location
Decent price for Caye Cauker
Decent sized rooms
Small balcony
Fans
Screens on windows
Decent bathroom

Cons:
Slow Wifi
No kitchen or fridge
Uncomfortable bed
